The capital city of Guatemala is located in the south central part of the country, with the Agua volcano on its horizon. It’s the largest city in Central America, and blankets an entire mountain plain. Remains from one of the first important Mayan cities, Kaminaljuyú, can be found in the western part of the city.

Guatemala City is divided up into 21 zones. The Plaza Mayor (main plaza), cathedral, national and presidential palaces are in the old city (Zone 1). Handicrafts and flowers can be found at the Central Market, also in the historical center. Most of the city’s museums are found scattered across zones, including: the Ixchel Museum (textiles and traditional Mayan clothing), the Popol Vuh Museum (Mayan and pre-Columbian art), and the Archaeology and Ethnology Museum (Mayan art).
