Intro

Formerly the site of a village called Onghiara, Niagara-on-the-Lake is a town in Canada located on Lake Ontario, just a short drive from Niagara Falls. Located 90 miles from Toronto, most of the town’s appeal is attributed to its 19th century historical landmarks including the Fort George National Historic Site, McFarland House and Niagara Apothecary, the oldest pharmacy in Ontario.

Locals and tourists can admire the natural beauty of Niagara-on-the-Lake along the Niagara River Parkway or by hiking and biking through the local neighborhoods such as Glendale, Homer and McNab. Virgil represents the town’s growing tourism—it is home to several large store chains and a sports park that caters to sports such as hockey and baseball. Each year the park hosts the Stampede Festival which features attractions, events and rides. The Shaw Festival is a popular yearly event that attracts visitors far and wide to the theatrical productions written by George Bernard Shaw that are held between April and November.

One of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s most valued heritage is its wine production, particularly Ice Wine (Eiswein), a traditional European wine which is made from the last grapes of the season. Tourists can attend the winter harvest picking or go wine tasting at one of the many wineries in the area such as Lailey Vineyard and Peller Estates Winery.
