San Mateo, Calif., in the heart of San Mateo County, is only about 30 minutes south of San Francisco and located near the San Francisco Bay. Its first inhabitants were members of the Ohlone Indian tribe, called Coastanoans by Spanish explores, who came to the region beginning in 1776. The city expanded during its stagecoach and great railway days, with wealthy families building estates in the region.
Today San Mateo is a growing Bay Area suburb, with a bustling downtown packed with restaurants, bars, shops and other venues to keep the crowds of young technology workers who flock to Silicon Valley entertained.
