    • C Zürich, Switzerland Save this
      • Zürich, CH

Zurich, Switzerland’s largest city, is located at the northwestern end of Lake Zurich at the mouth of the Limmat River, which divides the city in two. The modern heart of Zurich, including the train station and most churches, is on the west side of the river, while the hillier east is home to the little alleys of Old Town and the hip drinking spots of Niederdorfstrasse.

Contrary to popular belief, Zurich is not the capital of Switzerland (which is Bern), just its largest city. Zurich has long been known as a clean, efficient city, but it is also a truly fascinating and worthwhile travel destination. Zurich boasts an increasingly cosmopolitan population, though the more buttoned-down Geneva remains Switzerland's most culturally heterogeneous city.

The iconic symbol of Zurich is St. Peter Church, which has the largest clock face in Europe. A great place to relax around town is Lake Promenade, with a long lakeside boardwalk and a meadow where you can find thousands of people on a sunny day. You can get free bikes, skates or other fun transport at several stops throughout town, though be sure to watch out for buses and trams. Zurich also has several nearby ski areas that are easily accessible by train.

Of course, Zurich is as good a place as any to procure rich Swiss chocolate, precise Swiss clocks and watches and real Swiss army knives. You can always get some banking done here, too.

      • Switzerland

Switzerland is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It has borders with France to the west, Italy to the south, Austria and Liechtenstein to the east and Germany to the north. Switzerland is known for its polite and efficient people, and the crisp, clean beauty of the landscape.

Switzerland is renowned  for its awe-inspiring mountains (Alps in the south, Jura in the northwest) but also has a central plateau of rolling hills, plains and large lakes. The highest point is Dufourspitze at 15,203 feet while Lake Maggiore (on the Italian border) is only 640 feet above sea level. The climate is temperate, but varies with altitude. Switzerland has cold, cloudy, precipitation-laden winters and warm, cloudy, humid summers with occasional showers.

Besides the magnificent landscapes, mild climate and quaint, clean cities and towns, Switzerland is known for its neutrality in world affairs. It is considered an extremely safe and pleasant place to travel.

      • Dresden, DE

Dresden is the capital of the German federal state of Saxony. Located on the Elbe River, it is an industrial, governmental and cultural center, known worldwide for Bruehl's Terrace and its historic landmarks in the old town.

Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendor. The controversial bombing of Dresden in World War II, plus 40 years in the Soviet bloc state of East Germany, changed the face of the city dramatically.

Dresden attracts around ten million tourists a year, who come to see the Zwinger Palace, the Semperoper opera house and the Frauenkirche, a reconstructed church that is now the most famous landmark in Dresden. When asked what they like most about their city, Dresden citizens will reply Old Town (which is not very big, though it is home to many well-known attractions and world-class museums), Dresden-Neustadt (an alternative central quarter) and surrounding areas such as the wine town Radebeul or the mountain area Saxon Switzerland, great for outdoor pursuits and castle sight-seeing.

    • T Berlin, Germany Save this
      • Berlin, DE

Berlin is the capital city of Germany and the third most-visited tourist destination in the EU. It’s the largest city in Germany, with a population of 4.3 million within its metropolitan area.

Berlin is known for its rich history and its lively nightlife with many cafes, clubs and bars. It is home to numerous museums, palaces, churches and other sites of historic interest. Berlin’s architecture is quite varied: though badly damaged in World War II, Berlin has undergone an impressive reconstruction. It is now possible to see architectural examples of many different historic periods in a short time within the compact city center, from a few surviving medieval buildings near Alexanderplatz to the ultramodern glass and steel structures in Potsdamer Platz.

Berlin is—at least in many parts—a beautiful city, so allow enough time to see all the sights. A good map, such as the Rough Guide Berlin map, is highly recommended. While the public transport system is superb, the lack of signs in some of the larger stations can be confusing, so a good rail map is also essential.
