Whit Monday, observed on the seventh Monday after Easter, is a transplanted holiday from England. It was once a religious holiday known as Pentecost, celebrating the descent of the Holy Ghost. In the past, the community, dressed in their best clothes, paraded around town lead by young girls in white, thereby earning the celebration the name White Monday. Afterwards there would be a country fair with special food and drink. While the holiday is no longer religious, the tradition of getting together remains, only now everyone heads for the beach.
