Less than an hour from Zurich is the classic heart of Switzerland. Cruise past the Rütli, the legendary meadow where Switzerland is said to have been founded in 1291. Lucerne's impressive old town is a can't-miss destination, as is the lake, along which you'll find many of turn-of-the-century hotels and imposing views of the alps. If you're there in the summer, treat yourself to a boat ride (many of the vessels here still run on steam power). In town, marvel at contemporary architecture right alongside old-fashioned museums such as the Gletschergarten (which surveys the history of alpine tourism circa 1900). Before you leave, cross the famous Kappelbrücke, a wooden bridge over the river Reuss constructed in 1333 and painted with scenes from Swiss history.
