December is high summer in Chile and high time for touring the country's famous vineyards. With its rich soils and ideal grape-growing climate, Chile has gained international acclaim for its wines in recent years. The Maule and Colchauga valleys, south of Santiago, are the country's top wine-producing regions, but several fine vineyards near Santiago also offer guided tours and tastings. The winery has cellars and parks in Santiago, as does Santa Carolina, whose historic vineyard and cellars have been denoted as a National Monument. Admission is generally USD10-20, and tastings are offered at USD1 per glass.
