Tucked away in the countryside to the east of Beijing, a visit to Artists Village Gallery is well worth a day trip. This gallery is named for the nearly 500 artists that live in the village of SongZhuang; it is the largest community of its kind in the world. Residents live their lives in the pursuit of creating art that is representative both of their personal lives and their impressions of China's place in the world. Monthly exhibitions are arranged for the public, but visits must be booked in advance. There are also weekend classes and activities for children and adults.
