The parade of horses is a Costa Rican tradition (following in Sevillan tradition), and San Jose's version, the day after Christmas, is the country's largest and most famous. With both horses and riders decorated in bright colors, the parade advances along the Paseo Colon and Avenida 2. Riders from all over Costa Rica bring their best animals and fanciest attire. A carnival celebration follows with music, food, costume contests and dancing. The "Festival of Lights" takes place along the parade route that night, with spectacular fireworks for a finale.
