Founded in 1807 as a small herb market, Viktualienmarkt has developed over the years into one of Munich's biggest markets with an awesome array of fresh flowers, fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese, and fish. The market square is dominated by St. Peter's to the west and the Schrannenhalle (grain hall) to the south, a fantastic construction, which resembles the Marché de la Madeleine in Paris. Several fountains are scattered around the market and serve to commemorate the legendary local singers- Karl Valentin, Weiß Ferdl and Liesl Karlstadt. The market is open to the public till 8 PM.
