Chilehaus, or Chile House, is a magnificent ten storey office building taking up a whole street which was designed and built by architect Fritz Höger in 1922 to 1924. One of the finest examples of expressionist architecture, Chilehaus was commissioned by a shipping magnate who made a living trading saltpeter with the Chileans- giving it the name it goes by today. Made of clinker brick with a sharp point at one end, the structure reminds you of a ship's helm. The elegant facade, the gothic-style arcades and the intricate ceramic decor in the entrance hall all combine to make this one of Hamburg's most impressive buildings.
