Built in 1087 AD to protect the city's northern perimeter, Bab al-Futuh was for century the arrival point of pilgrim caravans returning from Mecca. The hulking gate is actually much larger than it seems—its base now sits five metres below ground level. The gate can be visited any time, but come during the day if you wish to ascend the two conical towers (access from Al-Hakim Mosque).
