Mixco Viejo, the capital of the Pokoman Maya, is an area of important maya ruins: it is one of the finest completely-restored archaeological sites in the country. The site is not easy to reach by public transport, so the best option outside of the tour is to hire a vehicle--a four-wheel drive is needed as the last 15 kilometers of road is a dirt track. The bus trip takes between two and three hours each way, making it difficult to get there and back in one day. There are no facilities near the site, so you must take food, drink and toilet paper. It is possible to camp overlooking the ruins.
