Vesuvius is 17,000 years old and is one of the most famous active volcanoes in the world. Its existence has been characterized by disastrous eruptions, including that of 79 A.D. which destroyed Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. In spite of this fact, around 700,000 people still choose to inhabit its slopes today. The whole Vesuvian area was turned into a National Park in 1995 and has been divided into various areas which can be hiked following the 25km of marked paths. It is easy to get up to the crater and there are some really splendid views from the top. Check website for more details.
