Dedicated to the spirit of Michizane, a ninth century scholar, Kitano Tenmangu or "Tenjin-san" is an extremely popular shrine with school children. They come by the coach-load from all over Japan to pray for success in school and university entrance exams. Here you will encounter a real "Kyoto" experience. Come early, around 7a, for the best bargains. And do not forget to haggle!
