A sub-temple on the western side of the large Daitokuji complex, Koto-in contains national treasures from both Japan and China. Less visited than other sub-temples, it provides a spot for quiet contemplation. One enters along a stone path to get to the viewing veranda, from which the partially mossed-over garden receives light through the maple trees. There is a solitary stone lantern near the Centre of the garden. In November, the autumnal colors are stunning. The sub-temple was established by the warrior Hosokawa, a Buddhist. He is buried here with his wife, who was a follower of the then-outlawed Catholic faith.
