At 110 meters high, the castle provides a wonderful view of the entire city out to the suburbs. A favorite place that many locals escape to on weekends to get away from the bustling city, it is considered a historic focal point of the city. In the 14th century it became the King's residence. As with many monuments in Lisbon, the castle was damaged by the great earthquake of 1755 and has since been restored.
