The Starlite Diner ranks among the most striking of all novelties in modern Moscow—an authentic, allegedly completely American-made chrome-plated American diner that appears like an alien spacecraft among the city's Stalinist buildings. It was brought over from Chicago bit by bit and assembled in a central Moscow garden square. It's a great place for parties—American and English expats hang out here. The cocktail bar is a favorite. There are two Starlite Diners in Moscow, this one is quite close to the American Embassy. The interior is all red and silver, reviving the atmosphere of the America of the '50s. The walls are covered with pictures of movie stars and covers of past Life magazines. Comfortable sofas are placed at opposite sides of tables—a good arrangement to accommodate friendly company. The food is traditionally American, ranging from sweet waffles to a selection of burgers. The menu includes 50 of the restaurant's special cocktails; it also serves a fine selection of extravagant (and large) desserts and milkshakes.
