The St James Barracks, today the training center for the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, was completed in 1827 at an estimated cost of TT$80,000.00 (US$13,000). The building took three years to construct and was built of stone taken from a nearby estate known as Champs Elyses in Maraval. At the time of its construction, it was known as the largest building in the Caribbean. It is believed that shots were exchanged on this site during the Spanish surrender of Trinidad to the British in 1797.
