Yosemite National Park uses a system of free Wilderness Permits to regulate the number of people in the backcountry. Free wilderness permits are required for all overnight trips into Yosemite's wilderness. Trailhead quotas limit the number of people allowed to start trips that will last one or more nights. The goal is to prevent over use and to assure that each visitor has a private experience without large crowds. Permits can be obtained at the Valley Visitor Center; at any entrance station; or at any agency that manages a trailhead from outside the park. Keep in mind that a Wilderness Permit is NOT used to assure safety. You should always leave a detailed itinerary, including the expected time of return with someone at home who can take action if you do not return when expected.
