Primarily known as an environmental education, oceanographic and maritime history center the Ocean Institute is an educational force to be reckoned with. Home to the Brig Pilgrim, the Spirit of Dana Point, the RV Sea Explorer, Dana Point Marine Life Refuge, and an incredible Ocean Education Center complete with a Historic Maritime Center the institute is popular with tourists and locals alike. More than 78,000 K-12 students and 6,000 teachers participate each year in its immersion programs ranging from overnights on the Pilgrim and whale watching on the Sea Explorer to exploring the tide pools and lab activities. In September the Institute is host to the Toshiba Tall Ships Festival which is the largest annual gathering of tall ships on the West Coast. Bring the family down for a day of exploring history and fun in the sun.
