Located 42 winding miles from Breckenridge is the town of historic Leadville, the highest city in the U.S. at an elevation of over 10,000 feet. Once a busy silver and gold mining center, the town is rich with history. Most of the buildings downtown were built between 1880 and 1905, and the striking, award winning Victorian architecture will make you feel as though you are traveling back in time. Make sure and stop at one of the town's numerous museums to learn a little more about the area and some of the characters that have colored its past, such as Doc Holiday and Susan B. Anthony! To really experience the history of the Rockies, a day trip to Leadville is well worth the trip.
