Established as a frontier fort in 1645, Petersburg grew to become a successful commercial center by the mid-1850s. Towards the end of the Civil War, northern troops used the city as a means to overtake nearby Richmond, capital of the Confederacy. Petersburg and Richmond fell to the US army after a grim 10-month siege. The Petersburg National Battlefield includes a driving tour with several stops highlighting the events of the battle. For interesting touristy spots visit this historical city just a drive away from Washington.
