Located across from Crown Center and Union Station, this newly opened museum is a memorial to the Great War (1914-1918), with a construction price-tag topping USD100 million once the memorial restoration is included. Replacing the old Liberty Memorial Museum, the structure was excavated into an inverted reflection of the towering obelisk above. Designated the country's official World War I museum by Congress, it contains field equipment, artillery, helmets, body armor, and uniforms, as well as varied exhibits including a field of 9,000 mock red poppies, each representing 1,000 dead soldiers. This is an excellent place to take in the scope and realities of the war, as well as the pain and death accompanying it.
