While many island shops, restaurants and inns close for the winter, here in Vineyard Haven businesses remain open throughout the year. This is considered the year-round town on the island. The town history began in 1871 when settlers separated West Tisbury and the area known today as Vineyard Haven. Located on prime sailing routes, it was for centuries one of New England's top seaports. In 1845, nearly 14,000 vessels stopped to get supplies here and wait for more favorable weather. Today, travelers tour the lovely parks, quaint shops, Greek Revival architecture and the West Chop Light.
