Formed by the powerful action of water flowing over rock, this gorge encloses Linville River for 12 miles. Elevations range from 1,300 feet on the river to 4,120 feet on Ginger cake Mountain. Characterized by steep, rugged terrain and a wide variety of rock formations, the gorge is covered by a hardy population of hardwoods and pines. Linville Gorge is a wonder-filled place to hike, backpack, rock climb, fish, hunt and camp. A camping permit, which is available for free, is required.
