Esca means "bait" in Italian, so it is not surprising that this Southern Italian restaurant's main focus is on seafood. Run by celebrity chef Mario Batali and restaurateur Joe Bastianich (also partners in Lupa and Babbo), Esca has innovative food, impeccable service and a charming atmosphere. Located on the edge of the Theater District, it features a dining room with pale yellow walls and a raw bar. Especially interesting are the crudos, pieces of raw fish seasoned with sea salt, olive oil and other condiments. The pastas, cooked fish and appetizers are also excellent.

(Rating: 4) Wonderful!

Every time I go to Manhattan (1-3 x a year) I always try to dine in one nice restaurant, which I have not tried before. On my recent trip (May 2008) I had the pleasure of eating here at Esca. This is now my favorite NYC restaurant and I will be glowingly recommending it to my friends. I had a halibut carpaccio that was like wafer thin slabs of butter. A linguine with clams and octopus that was to die for. And a fresh bluepoint oysters from new foundland that were the sweetest I've ever had. The service is great (although our waitress was a "low talker" and hard to understand even though the restaurant itself was not particularly loud). To top off the evening we even enjoyed a star sighting -- Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins enjoyed a quiet meal just across the way from us. Truly a great NY dining experience!
