Poogan was the name of a dog that got left behind when the house was sold; Poogan stayed on the porch even after the new owners decided to change a charming old Victorian house into a restaurant. The establishment's name choice was obvious, since the dog greeted everyone who came. Diners are still greeted with a Southern hospitality and menu. Dishes are made with local ingredients featuring such specialties as Miz Bertha's She Crab Soup, Poogan's Po-Boys (shrimp, oyster, catfish), Lowcountry Shrimp & Grits, Plantation Fried Chicken, Carolina Alligator, a host of mouth-watering desserts. The Food Network, Martha Stewart Living, Wine Spectator and the Travel Channel have all featured Poogan's Porch, and a number of celebrities have dined there as well. A weekend brunch is available from 9a-3p. Reservations are highly recommended.
