Great Experience at Novo Mundo

 by  anonymous  on  2008-01-02

We had never been to Rio before, and we planned our trip at one of the busiest times of the year, the New Year Celebration (Reveillon). We somehow managed to get a really cheap hotel room at the Hotel Novo Mundo, but were a little concerned about the location, in a district called Flamengo. As it turned out, we were perfectly located for everything we wanted to do, without all the distractions/reported dangers offered by Copacabana and Ipanema. We were within a 10 minute bus ride from the famous beaches and all the famous sights of Rio de Janeiro, in a hotel that is apparently well-maintained and reasonably well-staffed. The all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast was included in our room price, and the room (for 3 people) was big enough, clean enough, and comfortable enough for me to stay there again without hesitation. Most of the people staying in the hotel were foreigners, so the staff must know English pretty well (I used Portuguese to avoid any confusion), and we were able to get taxis to the airport reserved through the front desk. We felt perfectly safe walking around in the neighborhood, and found a number of inexpensive, quaint, and interesting restaurants within a 5 minute walk. The nearest beach is Flamengo, and I would advise against swimming there, as it is on the Bay and not the Atlantic. Overall, our hotel experience was excellent, and I would recommend the Novo Mundo and its surroundings very highly to anyone who is considering an alternative to the busier and more expensive areas of Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon.
