Outstanding
My companion speaks 7 languages and has traveled world wide. I speak 3 and have traveled a lot in South America. Casa Roland is tjhe most charming inn either of us has stayed in, ever. The owner has acquired an extensive collection of Costa Rican art and every wall is covered with art, some of which is clearly of museum quality. We were charmed by the cheerfulness of the staff and their desire and ability to be of service. We also stayed in the sister facility in Quepos and found the same courteous and cheerful staff. I had several conversations with staff members (I am fluent in Spanish) and everyone I talked to said how much they liked the owner and how well he treated them. The faciiltiy in San Jose has had the exact same staff for over three years...no turnover. We recommend this place without reservation. The owner is building hotels in Golfito and Nosara, as well and although we did not visit those we have been told they are at least as fine as the two we visited.
Outstanding
This hotel is a combination of things. It has a variety of some of the best art I've seen in one place besides a museum in my life. And it's everywhere you go in the labyrinth that is the Casa Roland. It came together the way amoebas come together - mutual attraction! The proprietor(s) bought up houses, house by house, and then, through construction wizardry which is ongoing and endless - kind of like the Universe - blended these houses together to make a labyrinthian oasis safe from the outside world. Safety is key to everyone there, and, really, all of Costa Rica is trying hard to find better ways to live in harmony with this greater body on whose skin we reside. But I digress. And the staff! The people of Casa Roland remind me of a well-run commune - everyone works together. As far as I can see, there is very little turn-over. Everyone loves it too much to leave! Most of the guests we've met the times we've stayed there are repeat customers, as we are now also. I'm almost reluctant to even write this review because I want this place to attract the kind of people that appreciate a certain questing character in life, and have a certain kind of philosophy. If you are a person that wants freedom of thought to flourish in the world, then you will be recognized instantly at the Casa Roland. But if you're not, then for all of our sakes, find a different hotel.
