Beach access was a plus!

 by  anonymous  on  2008-03-01

If you are not looking for extravagant luxury this is a great hotel for the standard room, a place to lay your head and shower to clean up. Right on the beach, great sunsets, close to the boardwalk and a large grocery store "Ley" next block over with fresh made bread, pastries and hot food. Housekeepers were prompt when asking for extras. You have to tell them to change the sheets and sweep if you want that done. Bring your own iron (clothes) and hair dryers. We did use the laundry service a few times and they did a great job and we received same day service even though they tell you it could be 24 hours. Restuarant service was not that great the few times we ate there but the food was pretty good.

The location is the best thing about the place considering there are no other decent hotel choices between the hotel zone and downtown. However, the area tends to be very noisy - granted this was a major holiday week, but there is a bar/restaurant next door and much street activity. The ocean view from the room was terrific and made up for a lot, including the very basic room with uncomfortable beds and extra small bathroom. The pool is unlit at night, which seemed dangerous. It was filled with young children at all hours - but, again, this was a holiday week so it might be different at other times. The restaurant staff is pleasant and accomodating, but the food quality is fair at best. Some of the food expected to be hot was cold at the breakfast buffet, and the weekly BBQ was a little expensive for the quality. Regular coffee is good, but decaf is instant Nescafe - I guess that's not so unusual in Mexico. We arranged for whale-watching and city tours from the lobby tour desk. Both were satisfactory, especially the whale-watching tour which went on to Yelapa. The city tour was a typical cursory overview of a few areas and a couple of stops for directed shopping - the tequila factory tour was mostly a long harangue from the owner on the bad quality of other brands. The river-front restaurant stop was the highlight - beautiful peaceful location, and good food. All in all, my rating of El Pescador is slightly less than 3 stars. I'll probably rent a condo in the future.

great trip - strange hotel room

 by  anonymous  on  2007-08-17

Excellant well managed and maintained Hotel. We have stayed here many times over 35 years, and El Pescador just gets better. Good central location. Wonderful supermarket 1/2 block away, as well as a great street taco stand 100 feeet away, if you need a quick delicious food fix almost anytime, day or night. Great fresh selections at the supermarket also. Swimming pool is kept very clean as is the Hotel and rooms. Staff very friendly, courteous, and most speak English. 2 Blocks from the Mallecon and a convenient money machine, just down the street from the Rosita Hotel (a sister Hotel to El Pescador, same proprietor). Easy access to Old Vallarta by rental car, taxi, or bus.

Beach access was a plus!

Local families with several small children took over the pool. Halls were noisy at night with children running the halls and screaming. Restaurant service extremely slow but nicely priced. Beds are like boards with paper thin pillows. The tile floors appear to have never really been cleaned (swept only). The fence blocking the view along the beach has a gate which is lockable, One evening gate was locked and no-one had the key. Staff selectively speaks or understands English.

Perfect Location, Friendly Staff

Puerto Vallarta is a beautiful city and the people are very friendly. This was my 4th stay at the El Pescador hotel however on this trip , I was given a very small room at the back of the hotel with only one window that opened to the hallway . And I was told not to open the window by security. The bathroom was so small that the door would hit the sink if opened all the way. I still had a great time and the room gave me something to laugh about at home when telling my friends about the trip.
