we had a good time

 by  anonymous  on  2008-07-01

We went with another family. Originally we were booked at the Viva Maya, but got upgraded to the Azteca. The hotel is really nice, very clean and the grounds were constantly cleaned and maintained. I am surprised at the criticism about the food and restaurants. The food at the buffet was very good, with good variety and the menu was changed daily. As for the ala cart restaurants, they did limit us to 3 nights' reservation for our 7 day stay. The food and service were excellent. The beach was very clean. Despite the criticism from other reviews, we had no trouble finding beach chairs. The staff was very friendly and very eager to help when requested. The drinks were initially weak. Tipping definitely helped and after a couple of times, the drinks were definitely up to par. This is a nice hotel providing good value for the money. Not a five star hotel, but comfortable, safe, and met our expectations.

we had a good time

This all-inclusive resort severely disappointed me. There was a lot of food, and a lot of drinks, but it was all of poor quality and watered down. The rooms were okay, and the bed was quite comfortable. The resort was very clean. It is a small resort, with only 270 rooms. However, there are very little activities. There is a beach, and one pool. Though kayaking, windsurfing, and swimming are readily available at the Azteca, one has to walk to her sister hotel, at least half a mile down, in order to use the archery ranges, rock-climbing walls, and trampolines. The gym in the resort had very little equipment and the pool is always filled. There are no elevators, and most of the resort does not have air conditioning. There is one tennis court, at the roof of a room "block". The check-in, concierge, and employees, are all very nice. I would not come to this resort again. Club Med is so much better.

Spring Break 2008

 by  anonymous  on  2008-06-30

Our group of 7 women celebrating 50th birthdays enjoyed our stay at the Azteca. We made reservations for the Wyndham Maya, requested rooms together and upon arrival were transferred to the Azteca down the street; they paid for a taxi to send us there. It was a short walk on a very safe street to use facilities if we wanted to use the Maya. We did visit the Viva Maya for lunch(buffet was similar) and one evening for a show (Maya's theater was much better for shows.) Water activities at Azteca were great. We used water kayaks, boogie boards and catamarans for free. Bikes available for free and good area for biking to visit shops, etc. Staff was friendly, available and encouraging. Buffet was good, included omelet station at breakfast, pasta station at lunch and dinner. Always very fresh fruit bar, salad bar and many hot dishes. Carving station occasionally. Always excellant Guacamole and salsa! We always managed to find something to keep us well fed. Drink service was good. Meals at "reservation" restaurant on grounds were okay. No air conditioning in buffet area, open to plaza but really needed some cross ventilation (that was very evident after having lunch at Viva Maya). Rooms were clean, air conditioned and refridgerator was restocked every day. We had a clock. Turndown service with chococlates only one night. All in All a fun time! Would stay again.

we had a good time

I went with 6 friends to celebrate all of us turning 50 this year. We all had a great time. Accommodations were good. Food was good. We liked the buffet, but it was also nice to eat at the fancier places a couple times for dinner. We were allowed 2 dinners for our 5-night stay, which was fine with us. There were plenty of activities. The beach area was very nice. They work hard at keeping the grounds well maintained. All the employees were a pleasure. We had a great time!

Spring Break 2008

 by  anonymous  on  2008-04-22

I orginally booked a room at the Viva Wyndham Maya, upon our arrival, the front desk clerk said there is a "problem" with your reservation and we are sending you and your guest to the Wyndham Azteca. She said that sometimes happens with Travel online reservations?! We were disappointed that we could not stay were we had planned. Friends tried to contact us at the Maya resort and left messages with the front desk, we walked back every night to see if we had any messages and everytime we were told no. The food at the buffet was decent, but the snack bar food was horrible. Drinks were watered down and they even ran out of ingredients for drinks (ie bloody mary mix). Our room was next to the pool..every morning music blasted from the speakers and the resort staff got on their microphones trying to rally people to get up and participate in their pool activities. The electricity went out the last day we there, so we had no working blow dryer, no lights, television, etc. Very disappointing stay. Wouldn't recommend.

Had a wonderful time

We traveled down here recently. The resort is just okay. We would not go back. The activities staff was outstanding as well as the beach. The buffett food was average to poor. Not much variety and bland. We were able to get reservations in two of the restaurants. They were both good. One word to others that go to these types of all-inclusive resorts and go to these "reserved" restaurants and wonder why they had a hard time getting a reservation and the place is only 1/3 full. These places have a pre-set limit on the number of diners they will serve a night and the number doesn't approach full capacity for each sitting. Another trick that these moderately priced all-inclusives use is to have a very cheap bottom of the barrel brand of house liquer that they use in their drinks. I believe it is watered down. You can request Bacardi or other such name brand and most of the times they will use it but you have to ask. This place didn't even have Kaluha but rather a cheaper alternative. Another trick that they do is to use a brand name but mix more drink than they normally would. For example, I ordered two of a strawberry coloda drink for my wife and I many times during the week. Everytime they would empty the blender for exactly two drinks. When I wised up and asked for Bacardi they somehow made too much of the drink and there was enough drink left in the blender after pouring two drinks for at least one more drink. Clever! The travel website is incorrect. No alarms clock or robes. Never saw a king room. Rooms are very spartan. Many cold showers. It is at least a mile to 5th avenue - not 5 minutes.
