Best place on Tahiti!

 by  anonymous  on  2007-12-15

The intercontinental is the best resort on the main island of Tahiti. I have stayed at the four biggies (Sheraton, Sofitel, Le Meridien, and Intercontinental) and this is definitely the best choice. It's location is prime - right near both the airport and port. The rooms are a little small, but very nicely decorated. The soaps, towels, and linens are spa quality. But by far the best thing about this resort if the pools!! The sand bottom pool is the nicest, most unique, most pleasant pool I have ever spent the day at! The food is excellent, though be careful about getting caught in the evening buffet for 80 per person - you can sit adjacent to the buffet space and order off the menu for much less. Everything in Tahiti is extremely expensive - at all the resorts. Don't let reviews about this one being expensive put you off - they are ALL expensive. Likewise, other reviews say Tahiti is dirty & poor - the city has some negative points, but the resorts are completely set apart from this.Having said all that, I would recommend you stay on one of the other islands that have more nature activities - Bora Bora, Moorea, Raitaia - it's worth the extra hop to get to those. But if you are in Tahiti proper for a reason (like we were transfering from a flight to a cruise this time), the Intercontinental is the place to stay.

Best place on Tahiti!

My husband and I stayed here for 3-nights prior to a cruise last November (we stayed at IC Moorea on the back end). We really enjoyed the location of the resort since it was close to town and the airport. The Le Truc stopped across the street from the property which made it easy and inexpensive to get into town when not handling baggage. The two pools were incredible - we spent hours each day in the sandy bottom pool, which had a lot of shallow areas and a swim-up bar. We also enjoyed kayaking around the property. We had a standard lagoon view room on the third (top) floor. The room itself was very clean, nicely decorated and had fresh flowers. The bathroom included a deep tub and was well appointed. The room also featured a large balcony with fantastic views of Moorea. The room had a couple of downsides: 1) the bed was VERY firm, 2) our room didn't include a couch or any type of sitting area inside other than a chair at the desk, 3) I would have liked a small refrigerator. We had a couple of downsides: 1) the lagoon wasn't that great and the beach access was very rocky (we found this to be the case though on most of the islands we visisted in FP)., 2) the wait staff didn't understand English well on the 3 occassions that we went to the main restaurant. It was VERY overpriced and had a poor menu. 3) getting ice was a chore. In summary, we had some issues with the room and restaurant but we LOVED the location, the view and the pools! We will stay there again in Oct 2008.

I have stayed at three of the "big five" resort hotels in the Papeete area on Tahiti, and this one is by far the best! The close proximity to the airport might make some folks wary, but we did not have any problem with noise. In fact, this was an excellent location as on this trip we were here for just one night & day after arriving to Tahiti enroute to a cruise, so the taxi fare was cheaper than other places further out. The other resorts are nice, but this one has the best *feel* with the gorgeous grounds, views, foliage, etc. The rooms are also nice with a tropical feel and luxurious bathroms. The sand-bottom pool is one of the coolest pools I've ever been in! Other reviews mention how expensive things are or that service is slow - well that's true in ALL of Tahiti. This Intercontinental is by far the best of the bunch.

Overall, this place is not worth the money. The service (including the restaurnats) was mediocre at best. The staff made several errors in various areas (check in/out, restaurants, activities, etc.) that are too numerous to list; and the attitude of the staff was generally lacking (although a few of them were very good). I would not recommend staying here.
