Good in most - terrible in others

 by  anonymous  on  2008-05-21

We booked this trip as a 10 yr vow renewal on the beach - family of 4 - even with months of planning and a dozen emails the ceremony was completely blotched ...no cake, no beach setup, no champagne, no NOTHING - really ruined the vacation for us ... however their terible conceirge aside - the resort is a nice clean resort with some very good staff - the pools were nice and the beach equipment was very good including snorkling equipment and Hobie cat. On site restaurant very good. Great screened porches!

Good in most - terrible in others

We just came back from our honeymoon, and would definitely recommend The Sands to anyone who is going to Turks and Caicos. This was a tremendous deal. The Sands is located right where you want to be in Turks-- Grace Bay. Grace Bay is one of the nicest beaches you'll ever visit. The Sands is a couple of blocks from some small shopping and a few bars/restaurants. The hotel is right on the beach and is extremely nice without being overly pretentious. We never had trouble finding an empty chair/umbrella to use on the beach or by the pool. It was very relaxing, and the staff was extremely courteous. Hemingway's, the restaurant on site, was very nice and moderately priced compared to neighboring restaurants we visited. They had a little bit of everything on the menu. The Sands provides a pleasant/relaxing atmosphere. Definitely worth the stay. If you can upgrade your room to an Oceanfront/Oceanview DO IT! The rooms are great size! When we checked in, we thought there was some sort of mistake because the room was so nice and big. A great place.

Great Location

We had a one-bedroom garden view for 2 adults and 2 teenagers. Plenty of room and a great view of pool and ocean from our screened in porch. Rooms are nicely decorated and kitchens had everything you needed for cooking at home. We would go early in morning to get spot either on beach under the palapas or a lounge at the pool. If there were no lounges left by pool in afternoon, the staff would bring out more chairs for you, so there was never a problem getting a spot. We only rented a car for a day to check out the island and go to the IGA. As a result we spent most of our time at Hemingway's for dinners. If you walk down the beach you can get to the other nearby hotels or can take a cab to other spots. The beach staff is very helpful at teaching you how to wind surf or will take you out on the Hobie Cats. Had a great, relaxing time and would stay at the Sands again.

Good in most - terrible in others

My husband and I have decided that each January we are going to some nice, warm place. This year, we could not have picked a better place to go. Turks and Caicos is the most beautiful place we have been. The accommodations were really nice--beautiful views of the ocean and the gardens. The screened in porch was especially nice. The linens and paper products were subpar, but the service was exceptional. They brought us bottled water every night. The pools are lovely, and the restaurant was good. However, we went to the IGA on Sunday after we got there and bought 100 worth of groceries and we ate most of our meals in. We did go on the Discovery Island Tour with J&B Tours. The beach lunch was really nice. There was an open bar all day and the two tour guides were a delight. They dived for conch, and they cut it up and fixed it for the lunch along with chicken and pork and lobster. The Sands has available water equipment. We went out on the Hobie Cat, and we did kayaking and snorkeling. They also have bikes but we didn't find the time during our week's stay for that. All in all, I would highly recommend the Grace Bay area for a vacation where you want to relax. I read two books and almost finished a third one. It was wonderful to sit by the pool looking out at the ocean under my umbrella, and then in the afternoon I took a chair and sat at the edge of the ocean and watched the sun go down. If you are lucky enough to be by the ocean, you are lucky enough!note bien: they do not sell alcohol on Sundays except in restaurants.

Great Location

My husband and I went there last year for our honeymoon and loved it. Our room was spacious with a balcony. We had an ocean view which was beautiful as was the beach(the sand was like powder). The hotel was casual and not overdone. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Hemingway's(the hotel's restaurant) had good food but slow service. Still, while you wait you can stare out at the ocean which is nice. You can take a walk down the beach and eat at some of the other hotel restaurants. Also, we got around by the Gecko bus which is cheap and convenient to get to shops and restaurants.

Sands at Grace Bay

Can walk 25 min. left to Coral Gardens for fantastic snorkeling (sea turtles, barracuda, etc.) or walk 25 min. right to restaurants, shops, etc. Hemingways is good-service is slow. Enjoyed the internet access, compl. airport shuttle, covered lounge chairs, use of bikes, kayaks, hobie cats. Enjoyed eating at the Tiki Hut and Calico Jacks. Highly recommend Caicos Adv. for diving. Seen sharks, eagle rays, sting rays, a dolphin, turtles, lobster, etc. The boat ride is 50-55 minutes and you are gone till 3:15. Diving is pricy at 109/2 tank dive. Would stay at Sands again.
