First off the hotel is very nice but I still expected more for the rate of the room as well as much better service. The "24 hour" butler service is not near as quick as they say. I had to call down 3 times within 3 hours just to get them to show us how to use the air conditioning system because it was really hot outside. Then, trying to go to the club at night is horendous. Apparently there's a new guy running the show who would rather have a million guys upstairs than two girls who are guests at the hotel. And this was a Thursday night. We also had friends who were part of the VIP bottle service and it was still the biggest hassle. We waited for an hour which being a hotel guest and paying * a night is absolutely rediculous. That was the reason we stayed there. They really need to work on their services and even after trying to speak to a manager absolutely nothing was solved. I don't expect to be treated like royalty or anything but good customer service and problem solvers are desperatly needed here.
After meeting with several hotels in the San Diego area, I soon realized The Ivy was where we needed to stay. Everything from the warm welcome to the constant willingness to accommodate our every need. It has the modern, masculine and professional style of NY with the hip and sexy energy of Los Angeles all brought together in beautiful downtown San Diego. You can venture out of the hotel if you wish, however there really is no place you'd rather be on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening - especially if you're single. Sunday - Wednesday is quiet yet available and most appropriate for a business retreat. Specifically for those who not only work hard, but like to play hard when the work is complete. Can't wait to go back!
I was immediately impressed with the overall look of the Ivy Hotel. Clearly the designers were aiming for beautiful and luxurious. The staff were courteous and helpful. The room was nice with a large plasma TV, seating area, and writing desk. The bathroom is modern with a glass encased bathtub/shower forming the wall between the bedroom and bathroom. This design offers zero privacy between the sitting area and the bathroom, thus anyone using the bathroom is on display. In retrospect, there was a door to this bathroom which MAY have caused the glass to become opaque when closed, but as I was alone in the room, I never closed the bathroom door. My only NEGATIVE comment (and a warning to future guests) is that the hotel has an "incidental charges" policy upon check-in which requires a credit card pre-authorization of 310.00 per night for the length of your stay regardless of whether you have prepaid for your flight and hotel through Travel agency. This policy is in place to guarantee their "fully-stocked" bar in every room, which cannot be locked. In my case, a four night stay required an additional 1240.00 authorization on my credit card which the hotel says it will release 24-48 hours after check-out. If TRAVEL agency did not know about this practice, I would request that they add this piece of information to benefit future travelers. I know I would have chosen a different hotel for my package had I been forewarned of this "pre-authorization" policy.
This is a beautifully remodeled hotel that is ideally situated in the heart of the Gaslamp District.. The front desk staff and the concierge were very friendly and accomodating. My wife and I stayed in a one-bedroom suite on the 6th floor which had a number of nice features - sophisticated urban decor, two plasma screen TV's, a separate sitting area, great views, etc. The only drawback to staying on the 6th floor is that there's a disco in the evening on the 7th floor rooftop pool and bar area. If you're a light sleeper, ask for a room on a lower floor. We'd definitely stay at The Ivy again.
