If you like stepping back in time a little bit while in the middle of all the action in San Diego's famous Gaslamp Quarter, then this is a good pick for you. If you like to spend a lot of money for a posh, modern hotel, then look elsewhere. It doesn't take a world-traveler to see that this is a "nearly restored" hotel from 1913 and might not be back to its original charm. Elevators are charming, actually famous, but not fast or roomy. Don't miss the plaque telling their story. The room was small but adequate. The bed was wonderful. The staff was very accommodating. Allow an extra 15 min if you're using the airport shuttle; not always prompt leaving! The restaurant was actually pretty good. If you're a light sleeper, consider earplugs. Not a bad trade-off for being in the heart of it all.
I had the worst night of sleep of my life! This hotel is literally in the middle of the Gaslamp District. We were very unlucky to stay here on the night before St. Patricks Day. All night long we could hear the beeping of trucks backing up, engines idling, chain link fences being assembled, Johnny on the Spots being unloaded, stages being set up, and lot of other noise! The street was closed off for the celebration making it almost impossible to get around. We were staying on the 7th floor. The worlds slowest and smallest elevator was broken most of the time we were there, making difficult to get our luggage up and down the stairs. If you are looking for a place to stay to party and be in the middle of the action stay here. But not a place for families or people who are into sleeping.
Have stayed here before but didn't have the chance to enjoy just cause we got in and out fast. But this time got to enjoy the heaven that is the bed! Wow! Hands down the best mattress I have ever stayed on! Slept like a baby! Water in the shower is a little erratic though, hot to cold to hot again then cold.
Let's start from the mattress lying in the hallway on the first floor, the elevator was tiny and no one offered to assist us (two ladies with heavy bags) with our luggage, my sheets were torn, my friends sheets (in her room) had stains on them, my ceiling had mold, I found a small dead bug in my bed, they forgot to do my wake up call, the lights in my room flickered, the bathroom was tiny with no tub. The place was a total dump. We checked out the very next day and went elsewhere! I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. The staff could care less. Laughable!
the ramada inn is an OLD hotel. the elevator is original, and while that's charming, keep in mind that if you're staying on the upper floors it takes a while to get there. The rooms are small and the bathrooms are smaller. most of the decor is stuck in the 1980's. overall, it's a place to lay your head, but it's not much more than that. the location is nice, but when you get out and walk around the city and see all the other hotels you could have stayed in, you might have post-reservation envy.
Yes, the hotel is old and the elevator is slow, but this hotel has alot of character! The rooms are small but look freshly painted and are nicely appointed. The bathrooms need to be updated but they are very clean and good water pressure in the shower. It was fun to try to imagine what it must of been like back in the days of the St. James Hotel. Brian's restaurant has very good food. The wait staff could be alittle more welcoming though.
A lodging staple for budget-minded road-trippers and business travelers.
Since the Ramada brand made its debut in 1954 in Flagstaff, Ariz., the hotel franchise has been offering dependable accommodations
