Props first: The Hotel of South Beach has one of the best staffs I've ever encountered (and I'm fairly well-traveled). The employees were super friendly, exceedingly helpful, and very promptly took care of a problem at the beginning of our stay.As far as locations go -- this one is pretty good. You're a block from the beach where you have access to complimentary chairs and umbrellas, and if you book a room here, you're staying in a historic art deco property (very interesting). Dinner at Wish is excellent -- great food and beautiful candle-lit atmosphere. Now for the criticism: The place could really use a thorough cleaning. The rugs in our rooms and in the hallways were stained. Floors in the lobby, the elevator and leading out to the pool needed a good washing -- you could see dirt on the surface and in the corners. Furthermore, some used room service trays outside a room down the hall were there for almost an entire day. I would guess it's been a number of years since the hotel's last renovation. Lobby furniture is worn. The walls could stand a coat of paint. The cute bathrooms are showing their age -- places in the shower need to be re-grouted. I said I would stay here again because the superior staff won me over. But, if you're only interested in the accommodations, you might want to think twice.
I've been to Miami 20+ times. This hotel is the best bang for the buck. You won't get this value anywhere else in Sobe.Things I loved:Rooftop pool was awesome. Fresh large comfortable fluffy towels both to dry off with and on the beach chair. We went in November and it wasn't crowded - always got a chair. Massages were available in the cabana. Friendly crowd. Great bar with full service for food from the restaurant Wish. The bartender and the staff gave quick service. This is definately the highlight of this hotel. The location was great. A block from the beach, across the street from a spa, a block from Ocean. Pretty much everything you want within 5 minutes.Lots of mirrors in the hotel room and the bathroom was adorable. Decorated well. Nothing too fancy shmancy - just really cute decor. Simple details such as the knobs on the dressers and the bathroom shower/sink.Only complaint:The walls are thin. If you are looking for total silence - this isn't the hotel for you. I actually heard our neighbor on his cell phone (talking loud). Also, one day (in the random middle of the day) there was a drunk ramdon walking through the halls and security was called. Of course, this could've happened at any hotel though.Overall, my experience there was awesome. Had a great time and this rooftop pool is going to make it tough for me to want to stay anywhere else for the price!
Although decorated beautifully, the room was extremely small. The pool had an awsome view, however the smell of the exhaust vent from the restaurant in front of the pool was overpowering - really got sick of smelling fried onions and meat! They also don't tell you that the pool closes early in the evening for private events and the restaurant was also closed for a private event the night we chose to stay in and dine. Dirty dishes from room service sat outside the room next door from morning until late at night, however, the staff were all pleasant and helpful.
