I like this hotel a lot. It has an old school feel, reminds me of an Elvis Movie. Staff is nice, location is right by the Hawaii Volcanoes National park...
This place seriously needs renovation--like NOW! It looks like it hasn't had any refurbishing since the 70s, if then. We stayed here one night only, as it...

Staff was very cold
Older hotel (1965) but kept in fairly good condition. Compared to the other Hilo hotels along Banyan Drive this is by far the best. Some of the other looked down right scary. But don't expect anything extra special and you won't be disappointed. It was clean, safe and a good location for exploring the Volcanoes National Park and other areas.
I would remind anyone staying in Hilo that there not many options and this is one of the best options. having said that don't expect too much. I found this hotel to be very good compared to other hotels in Hilo, specially if you are on budgeted trip. The room was big, bathroom was clean, beds comfortable. Draw back, if you don't eat dinner at 9 you will go hungry unless you want to go outside the hotel. There is a place near by I think called Ken's pancake house, it's reasonably priced and open all night. Everything else get closed by 9. If you have less time and want to maximize your time in Big Island. I would suggest that you stay at Hilo and in Hilo Castle. Everything is close by.
There aren't alot of choices in Hilo so here's your only good option. The hotel is fine but don't expect a 5 star experience. The beds were fine and the room was clean. It's a good value and I would definitely stay there again.
We only stayed here for a couple days, but it was a nice place. Pretty close to Volcano National Park (which is why we went to the big Island). The hotel wasn't the best place in the world, but it was clean with an old town charm and the room was pretty big overlooking the water. I'd stay here again for sure especially for the price.
My sister and I stayed at this hotel and I have to say was pleasantly surprised. Although, it's an older hotel, the staff were very friendly and the room was very clean. The location was great, not that there is a lot to do in Hilo, but we were there for family reasons. I ended up having to extend my stay a few extra days and stayed at another hotel near by because this hotel was booked. Although the other hotel the rooms were rennovated, by far I was way more comfortable staying at the HIlo Hawaiian. If I have to come back to Hilo, the Hawaiian is where I would elect to stay first!!
