This hotel is a real gem @ *. Rather than the usual box, my room had seperate kitchen and a livingroom/dining area that closed off from the bedroom via french doors. Each room is themed and named for a different writer with furnature from their period. Modern updated bathroom sparkeled, bed firm and comfortable, best of all it is built of brick and plaster the walls are thick and traffic is moderate. It is the quietest accomadation I have experienced in some time perhaps ever, although I did have the advantage of an end unit. The Oak Park area is marvelous, uncrowded, very safe, simply delightfull... small shops, restaurants, churches, library and parks. Best of all, hotel is 2 blks from the light rail, you can make downtown in 20 min and be at the Chicago Hilton in half an hr. (walking) much superior to trying to drive into downtown and find parking. I ended up leaving the rental in the parking garage for the duration. Excellent in house restaurant w/bar, martini's are overpriced, breakfast is so so, the Beef Wellington is yummm ditto for extensive seafood menu. Desk staff varies from very good to not so good. I would fire the night clerk who I found sleeping in the back room on my arrival and who is a bit surly. I also overheard her in a heated argument with annother guest. But the older gentleman @ morning desk was as professional, dignified and helplull as I have found anywhere and better than most. If you like well kept vintage accomodations, safe streets and peace and quiet at prices in the * per night range I highly recommend this hotel and its where I will stay wnen I am in Chicago next.
The Hotel is old and the carpet may be worn but the building has charm and the room spacious. The neighborhood with the Frank Loyd Wright architecture and well kept victorian homes was very enjoyable to walk through. Very near the El, we were able to acess the loop within a half an hour. Parking free on weekends. None of the pressure of big city traffic or pace. We plan to return.
Carpet was dirty and dingy. Front desk was very helpful. Rooms were poorly decorated. Carpet dirty. Bathroom toilet so close to sink could barely sit on it. Did not stay @ hotel @ all. Left for a beautiful hotel calle Carroton which was recomended by travel agency person. She was very helpful in giving a nother hotel with wonderful accomdations. There was no convenient parking. It could have been a great old hotel but looks really run down.
My husband and I honeymooned here and we could not have possible asked for anything better. It was exactly what we were looking for. Oak Park is a quiet town but you can find anything you want in it. The pictures do not do this hotel justice. The price is very good for the value you receive. We ate at the Hemmingway Bistro every morning for breakfast, and once on Martini night (try the Choclatini)it was so delectable everytime. We absolutely loved staying here and would very much recomend it to anyone who wants a quiet, yet fun get-away.
Very nice, cozy hotel. Convenient to downtown Oak Park. Loved the old manual elevator.
