The room's air conditioning unit was not working properly so the room was warm. The A/C sounded like a 737 on take-off. The water in the tub did not drain well. We lifted out the drain and found a wad of hair the size of a baseball. The towels were very thin, cheap, and not absorbant. A couple of the elevators were not working properly during our stay. I would not recommend this hotel or stay here again. The only saving grace was the view of the Chicago River.
Hotel 71 has great decor and great location; but that is where it ends. The elevators were not working properly; we took the service elevators instead to eliminate waiting 10-15 minutes. The rooms were not worth the money. I would not stay here again. Although the staff was curteous.
I thought this would be a great hotel at a cheap price, but definitely not. The elevator stops on every other floor, so if you're in a rush, you might as well take the 30+ flights of stairs down. There was no restaurant or bar, and had to travel extensively just to find an ice machine. The closet looked like something you might see in a basement. The paint in the tub was chipped so it was not the most visually appealing. Also, when the room above us was using the shower while I was, it leaked water right on my head from the ceiling. The only thing great about this stay was the riverview.
the people that worked at the hotel were very friendly and accomodating to us. We were upgraded free to a corner room with views of the river and city. Are room was very large and worked out great for the family. It was close to everything and we never used our car. I would stay again. The only complaint was the elevator was very slow.
The decor in lobby has now seen better days. Only two elevators for 38 floors and one broke down. Both were slow but one was SCARY and they turned it back on after a short weekend repair. I was PRAYING (I mean seriously) that it would let me out without crashing. I walked down 9 floors so I would not have to ride it again. The wireless internet did not work the first half of the stay. The carpeting is old and worn everywhere. Ice can only be found on floors 12 and 38 and NO soda machines in the hotel. NO RESTAURANT, only room service. I stood in water past my ankles every morning because the tub did not drain properly. The blow dryer was old and barely worked. The beds were also tough and hard. No drapes in the windows, only shears, so you WILL wake up at 5:30AM on a sunny day in June. The maid service was good, the porters and desk people were friendly. The hotel itself needs a serious update and upgrade, especially the elevators. Someone may get hurt there.
We were worried after seeing so many complaints. But really, for what we paid, this hotel was fine. Yes, the elevator was slow. But the rooms were big, the beds were comfy, the bathrooms were clean, the staff was friendly and the location was excellent. If you don't have a car this is a great place to stay - we took the subway from O'Hare and walked or used the subway or the El everywhere we went.Don't let the scary reviews fool you. Unless you're super picky, you'll have a perfectly fine stay and a great location from which to explore the city!
