The hotel is beautiful, very clean and the staff is awesome! The room is quite small though - a lot smaller than lower end hotels. There are 10 floors and the elevators take FOREVER. The food is pricey but very tasty. Overall it's a great hotel and I would stay again.
My boyfriend and I stayed at The Drake for Valentine's Day weekend. We reserved our room two weeks ahead of time, and upon check-in we were asked if we wanted one or two beds. Obviously, one bed would be just fine and we stated that. Unfortunately, we got placed in a room with two TWIN beds! We were on the 8th floor, which was newly renovated. The room itself was nice and clean, but the view left much to be desired. Also, one major problem I had with this hotel was the noise level. Not only could you hear everything outside but you hear every door close, people talking in the hallway, and staff. I was up all night because of the noise in the room next door - so bad that you heard them going to the bathroom! The bed was uncomfortable, and they only provided two bath towels. (I know we had two twin beds, but come on...) The bathroom was big enough, but there were hairs in the shower. Also, the lighting is not very good. Internet usage is quite expensive as well. Bring your own snacks and bottled water, because we couldn't find a single vending machine! The doormen were friendly, and the location couldn't be better! All this being said, if you don't mind small beds or noise it's a nice place to stay. I just felt that it was highly overpriced for what we received!
I think I have developed a personal love affair with this beautiful old dame of a hotel, This is the second time we stayed there while viisting Chicago. This time for a wedding. Our room was spacious for our family of 4 including two teens. It had two twin murphy beds (pull down from the wall) and a luxuriously appointed king bed. We entered the room to find a gift of chocolates and bottle of Evian from the manager welcoming us back! (our last visit was several years ago.) The location is supurb ( surrounded by the best shopping and resturants and with views of Lake Michigan) but the best thing about the Drake is the fine details right down to the settee in the elevator. If you appreciate a turndown service complete with candies on your pillow each night you will get it at the Drake. I felt pampered in all ways being a guest there and will always stay there when I am in the windy city!
This was our first trip to Chicago. We loved the Drake and the location of the Drake. Being able to look out over the park and Lake Michigan was beautiful. The shopping for my wife was fantastic and my checking acct is considerably lighter due to same. We didn't eat in any of the restaurants in the hotel because we wanted to taste Chicago so to speak. Rosebuds steak house which is just a few steps down from the Drake was an excellent steak house.
This hotel definitley has old world charm and the quality of service too often a thing of the past that goes with it. From the doorman to the room service staff all were courteous and more than helpful. The bed was very comfortable and the quality linens made a real difference.Personal touches like a concierge that charged my mobile phone while I was at dinner, make this a place I'll be happy to come back to.
We had a lovely 3 night stay at The Drake over New Years. There were a few disappointments though. We booked in October and called the hotel for New Year's Eve info which they had none at the time. When we called back in December, the party was sold out and we could not even eat at the main hotel restaurant. Housekeeping left something undone each night. But the room was spacious and nicely appointed and the hotel is beautiful with a great location convenient to shopping and restaurants. Don't miss the Coq d'Or for martinis and the hamburger!

BEST Martini in town
Coq d'Or most certainly has the best martini in town. You might think the price is a little steep but it's actually 1.5 martinis.
