If I were Holiday Inn I would be embarrassed to have my corporate name associated with this hotel. I see reviews where a major renovation happened recently, if that's true it's going down hill fast. It is in a quiet neighborhood, but parking is non existant even to check in, I had to circle the block 4 times waiting for a tour bus to unblock the 2 space loading zone in front of the hotel. The lobby is deceptive in its modern appearance. The carpet in the halls on the room floor was stained and horribly dirty. The rooms are smaller than college dorm rooms, I've never stayed in a hotel room this small before in my life. While the bathroom looked like it had new features and there was a flat screen TV on the wall, the overall decor was a throwback to the 60's right down to the puke green fabric headboard that covered the one wall above the bed. The bathroom sink didn't have a working drain plug, and the shower curtain was covered in mildew. Self park is virtually non existant, and the vallet is exhorbitant at 50/night.
The hotel is in a GREAT location and is new and clean. It was the smallest hotel room we've ever seen, but it was fine for two of us for a weekend trip. The staff was extremely professional and courteous, and the breakfast was good. We would definitely stay here again!
The hotel provided all the information we needed to get around Chicago. We went there to shop, sight see, and see a show. The location was great. We walked to every thing we needed to. And when we got tired the trolley system picked us up and took us the rest of the places. It was also a nice surprise to have a hot breakfast in the morning to start the day.
Getting to the room is a chore. The hallway to my room was at max 3 feet. If you have bags it is a tight fit. The cleaning cart blocked the entire hallway, which could be a fire hazard. Oh, one of the elevadors wasn't working, and I'd heard one of the staff say that they break down all the time. So if you don't mind climbing 16 stories, go for it. When I first walked into the room, I was shocked at the size. WOW, they are small. The room on the top floor was tiny!!! There were 2 double beds that barely fit in the room. They had a great flat LCD TV, because a regular TV would not have fit into the room. No desk, no chair. I liked the sink in the bathroom, but again very small. The windows were open so mesqitos were in the room...someone didn't know how to latch a window. I ended up killing all the pests. Watch the valet, most of them are good, but the one they had Saturday morning let a luggage carrier run into a beautiful Mercedes. Front desk people were friendly, but knew nothing about Chicago. I knew where to go for food, and they didn't. They didn't even know who Harry Caray was or where his resturant was located (it's about 8 blocks away, easy walk). Make sure you take everything. I forgot some nice leather sandles in my room, which were never found. When contacting the hotel, no one tried to help. I left messages, I called at least 5 times and no one was helpful. For the money, you can stay at a place called the Fairmont that is outstanding.
I met my sister and mother in Chicago for Mom's Day. This was not our first choice of hotel and we were kind of worried about it after we read more of the reviews. So, we went with a positive attitude and it was better than expected. My sister said it was like being on a cruise ship...very tight in the two bed room. We did not spend much time there, too much to see. There wasn't much space to store things, but we improvised and got creative! (Hint: the chairs under the desk are useless and if you turn them around under the desk, a suitcase fits under there nicely.) The beds were EXTREMELY comfortable!!! The bathroom was rather tiny...but it worked just fine. The decor is beautiful and there was lots of room in the breakfast area for seating. Great breakfast. Service to get refills on these things was SLOW. The creamer ran out and it took forever to get the staff to refill. The doorman was very helpful as was the front desk staff. Word of caution, the 3rd floor is smoking. We were in 204 (nice room away from the elevator and great view of the front of the building), and when we returned one evening, it smelled like someone had smoked IN OUR ROOM!! If you are sensitive to this, be careful. We kept our window cracked while we were out to prevent the smell again. A non-smoking hotel would be great! Also expect long elevator waits if you are on the higher floors. All in all, we would probably stay there again. The location is AWESOME! Close to everything!!! Great restaurants around and several bars worth trying out. Easy walk to Hancock center and Water tower place. Excellent weekend!
This was my first time in Chicago on my own. And I just happened upon this hotel on the internet. I would not only stay here, each and every time that I come to Chicago. But I would recommend it to family and friends.
