Used to be a great value, now getting over-priced
I have been going to Sam's Town about twice a year since around 2001, even before the big remodel. I have always thought Sam's to be be a great...
sams town caters to locals and is proud of that. There are decent palces to eat at the hotel, and it is across the street from a walmart. The pool area needed tending. The bar was never open, and there were towels and ashtrays everywhere. The hot tub was having "issues", so we never used it. The maid service was excellent. It's on boulder highway away from the strip. There are shuttles that you can take to the strip and beyond that run very timely. It is a good value and the casino is very nice.
Not too bad. The best part was the cheap and huge breakfast and dinner buffets. There were a variety of things to do including a laser show, bowling, a movie theater, and of course gambling!! My only real problem was that they don't have a free shuttle to and from the airport- you have to take a cab.
The absolute worst buffet ever!!!!, at any time!!!! , at any place!!!!!! Cold, sloppy over cooked food presented by a staff the just didn't care. The Harvest is a little better, better quality food (still they offered creamer instead of real cream for coffee) but still cold and poor service; Willie an Jose's was decent food and reasonably priced, large portions(no refrigerator in room so it went to waste) and terrible service. If you decide to eat at the food court brush up on your spanish if your order doesn't correspond to a number. You will end up eating here since you are so far from the good places to eat. We know how to get around driving but still there are times one does not feel like battling the traffic and this is just to far from the action. The laser light show and park in the center are sort of tacky, like something Disney threw out twenty years ago. The rooms were clean and the housekeeping excellent. The slots are loose and allow for enjoyable play but the slot club gives no perks just redeemable points which can be cashed in or used at food venues (you don't earn much for your play either). So if you just want a clean room and a place to play some slots this would be okay (you'll still have leave for food). If you want a Vegas experience go elsewhere.
THE HOTEL IS FINE IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO DEAL WITH THE STRIP. THE SHUTTLE IS FINE, BUT IT TAKES AWHILE TO GET TO THE STRIP AND BACK .... WASTING TOO MUCH TIME WITH WAITING AT THE BUS STOP.
I have been going to Sam's Town 2 times a year for many years, even before the big remodel. I always thought the value to be outstanding, especially for weekends. Over the past few years that value has diminished. I've actually been quoted as high as 260 per night, which considering the Boluder Highway location is outragious. I used to be able to get casino rates as part of their slot club but have had to fight for it the past 4 times I've gone, even though the host admitted I was gambling more than before. I mean, let's be honest, the rooms are small, the beds hard and uncomfortable, and the cleanliness is average at best. What made this a great value were the rates in comparision to hotels on the strip or downtown. However, some good points: The resaurants overall are good. Fellini's (Italian) and Willy & Jose's (Mexican) are above average, with Fellini's being in the Mystic Falls area. Just plan your meal when the water show is NOT going to be on. VERY loud. Billy Bob's (Steak) used to be one of the best but the food quality has dropped a little. Still, great portions. The buffet is huge with lots of options. The cafe isn't bad, just not open 24 hours any more. The slots use to be some of the loosest in LV, which was another reason it was a great value. But since the remodel has really tighten up. I don't mind losing, just let me play for awhile. Again, it was a great value. Nowadays there are many other options with better rates in more convenient locations. I'm part of a group that goes twice a year and we all agree. Time to consider different options when we go this September, 2008.
I've stayed here one other time earlier in the year and gave it a great review. Hard to believe, but this place just keeps getting better. They've drasitcally improved their sportsbook and all the other great fun is still there. Where else can you go to get 24 hour bowling!!! Worth doing just to say you did it. There's plenty to do there and you won't be disappointed. Their christmas light show was spectacular. A great place to stay especially for the low price.

Always the best hotel in Vegas!!
Why? Because it's very quiet, amazing with its indoor park and the employees are more than friendly. Good food , the buffet is still one of the best. The rooms are quiet so , yes, you can sleep in Vegas!!....not the same story on the strip...I used to stay at Luxor,Excalibur and Monte-Carlo...never again. All is so expensive..the strip is so noisy... Definitely my favorite hotel , I recently spent three weeks there.I had a very very good long vacation.
