This is an old hotel which was opulent in it's time. The suite with the glass doors provides privacy - important when traveling with family. Our teen stayed up watching TV while we were able to sleep without being disturbed. Mattress was on the hard side and bedspread was very heavy on my feet. No light blanket was provided. Marble bathroom was small but OK. Airconditioning was outstanding - I like it COLD when I sleep and I was able to get that by putting the thermostat on low instead of high. Don't know why. Breakfast was served in a very nice wood panneled room but there was only ONE overworked and irritable lady staffing the dinning room! She took the reservation, seated you, then incredibily COOKED the breakfast at a buffet like table. I've never seen anything like it. She was cooking in a suit. The choices were 16.50 for a breakfast of bread, cereal and juice or 20 for EVERYTHING. The concierge is very capable and looked just like George Clooney. Many good restaurants nearby and Nat His Museum is close. One big complaint I have is the mini bar. DO NOT touch it. It has a device on it that charges you (outrageous sums) if you even MOVE an item. When I went in I cautioned our teen not to get anything from the bar but but it has a snack tray on the top with nuts temptingly displayed. I thought I'd move the nuts where they couldn't be seen then for some reason I didn't. Good thing because back in the bedroom was a note card saying if anything on the snack bar was removed for 20 seconds you were billed for it. It left me with the feeling the hotel was desparate.

The Excelsior is in a great neighborhood with lots of inexpensive restaurants and a family feel. The location is terrific. You are steps from Central Park and public transportation. The rooms are nice and fairly large for New York. The beds are VERY comfortable. We would happily stay at the Excelsior again.

I was really surprised when we got to the hotel, the neighborhood was great we always felt save walking around even at night, sometimes it would just be me and my son. The hotel upgraded us to a suite when we arived and that made all the difference in the world, the kids had a pull out sofa and we had a king size bed, and it was the most confortable bed and bed covers. The room staff was soo wonderful not only with us but with our kids, they were very helpful in making reservations and getting us a rental car. The rooms were very clean and not so small and we have seen small. Very good restaurants, I would recomend, Sarabeth, EJ's dinner and a few others around the neighborhood. Would deffenetely stay here again.

This was a perfect spot with family - it's quiet and nice. In front of Museum of natural History and 1/2 a block from central park. Train was on corner -so easy access to all areas. Hotel does not offer free coffee nor do they have any microwave or refrigerator in room. Coffee a bit expensive and should at least be complimentary. Everything else was good. Nice place and nice service.

Very friendly & helpful staff!!! We were upgraded to a corner suite on the top floor. Great deal for * per night! Rooms were very clean. Great and safe location right next to subway station, Central Park, and Museum of Natural History. I will definitely stay there again.

We had a great experience at the Excelsior. My husband and I were travelling with two 18 year old boys - one 5'10" and the other 6'3". We reserved a single room with two double beds but upon seeing the boys, the front desk upgraded us to a two room suite with two queen size beds and a pull-out sofa bed at no extra charge. Room was on the 10th floor overlooking the park by the Museum of Natural History, and it was absolutely beautiful with french glass doors separating the living room and bedroom, floral tiles decorating the bathroom. Locations is an easy walk to the subway, dozens of restaurants, Central Park, and Columbus Circle. We needed more towels and they were delivered within minutes, and the concierge was pleasant and very helpful with directions.
