The rooms are a bit small (okay, REALLY small), but once you get past that little tidbit, this is one of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed in, up there...

some of the front desk staff were excellent and others were self absobed. The Valet and bell staff were excellent and friendly. The rooms look great, but are very small. Not a bad thing, but if you are looking for a room with a view, talk to the front desk. I was put facing an alley on the small room on the 2nd floor... avoid the low floors...
The rooms are very small, but avant-garde modern. Very different than a typical hotel. Kind of felt like you were staying in an art gallery. The bathrobes were a nice touch. We will stay again, but be sure you don't have a lot of stuff or try to fit your kids in a room with you, because it won't fit.
As soon as I arrived, I was informed they didn't have a non-smoking bedroom. The entire floor smelled, however the bedroom wasn't as bad after I left the window opened for a few hours. The room service menu didn't have one single vegetarian option, and the only thing they were able to make a vegetarian version of was an omelet. The mini-bar was never refilled, not even with mineral water. The location is very convenient and the decoration is more modern than many hotels. The staff is also nice, but the overall experience needs improvement.
The service, cleanliness, decor, valet, and room service were all first class. We are glad we chose this hotel. We will stay there again.
Husband and I stayed at HL on our honeymoon. It was a great place! The decor is beautiful, one of the reasons we choose the HL. Yes, the rooms are small, but it is a boutique hotel and they felt cozy and like a swanky bedroom, instead of like your typical hotel room. The beds are SO comfortable, and they have a pillow menu to choose different types of pillows. The staff is very accommodating; they give you a newsletter of sorts of what is happening around Portland that week, we saw something that we wanted to do, and asked for directions from the hotel desk. They were able to get online, get us directions and information, and get us a taxi. Very helpful. The location is great. We didn't rent a car and had no problem getting around using the train, trolley, and taxis (sorry I don't remember the real names!).I would stay there again in a heartbeat, and am planning a vacation at their sister hotel in Nashville (Hotel Preston) this month.
The location of this hotel is very convenient for downtown activities and is easy to get to/from.
