Wedding DISASTER at Marriott!

(Rating: 1) by ladybug7979 on August 11, 2008

My fiance and I got married at this resort in May after two years of planning and many, many, many payments, as anyone who has ever married (or experienced St. Thomas inflation) can imagine. Though the island of St. Thomas is breathtakingly beautiful and we had a lovely time outside the hotel, the Marriott Frenchman's Reef made a disaster of our wedding, and I highly advise you NOT to get married there under any circumstances. When our decorating committee arrived to decorate our reception hall at 3 p.m. as planned, they found that the four single rooms that were to be used for the reception were not only not set up and ready to be decorated, they were all filthy, full of trash, tables and miscellaneous equipment—a mere two hours before the wedding!! One of the rooms was occupied by a couple of ladies making flower arrangements, and as they had apparently been set up in there for several days, they had no intention of moving and were quite irate to discover that we had a wedding taking place there! Of course, our wedding coordinator and the Director of Events were nowhere to be found (someone said they had gone to lunch!) and the rest of the Marriott staff was totally unconcerned because it was "not their job", so my parents, grandparents, and several other wedding guests had to jump in and clean the reception hall, frantically decorate and arrange it, and attempt to get themselves ready for the ceremony in less than two hours. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to fix the filthy tablecloths, torn curtains, and dirty carpet, and the place definitely looked shabby for our reception. Due to the hotel's horrific lack of preparation, our reception was held in three out of the four promised rooms (which we had already paid for), which resulted in an extremely overcrowded and overheated reception. Further, the Marriott staff tried to force us to use only six tables instead of the eight that we planned and paid for, due to the lack of space that was their fault! As if all of this isn't appalling enough, the bad behavior and lack of planning continued throughout the ceremony and reception! To name just a few examples, our wedding planner marched right up the aisle just seconds before the bridesmaids, in full view of all guests, and unceremoniously dumped the rose petals we paid to have sprinkled up and down the aisle into a big heap in front of the gazebo. As guests were flooding into the reception site, she was standing out front hurriedly unwrapping the guest book and tackily tossing pens and napkins onto the table in full view of everyone! During the wedding photos, all of us were placed on a lawn that was absolutely covered with iguana feces, which got all over my wedding gown and the wedding party's clothes and will not come out to this day! The wedding site and grounds were trashy and unkempt, and not at all what we expected, given the site photos we were given and ungodly amount of money we spent to get married there. Since we have returned from our wedding and honeymoon, the shenanigans have continued: the Marriott somehow "lost" our wedding video, which we of course paid for (though the lost memories are much sadder than the money), double-charged our credit card for the entire amount of the wedding (which is taking forever to resolve), and managed to come up with a fraudulent additional charge for which they could provide no proof over two months after the wedding. Believe me when I tell you that I can't WAIT to be done dealing with these people, and we will never, ever go back to this hotel. All in all, the Marriott staff's attitude, lack of professionalism, and nonchalance regarding the horrific state of the reception site and event itself are unforgivable, and I would recommend that you get married elsewhere unless you want to be severely overcharged and overstressed for a haphazard, sloppy wedding.

The room was decent but had I known all the details of the room I would have spent the extra money to upgrade. Our water view room had a nice view, but there was significant water damage on the ceiling and the television was outdated and very small. Also, there was a bar of soap left by the previous guests that remained in the shower. Ewww! That's the bad news, now the good news. The hotel staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The food, views, pools, access to attractions and the beach were perfect.

Front desk was cordial, very professional. Room service was per schedule (45 minutes for delivery). Everything was within easy access. Overall experience was good, not extraordinary but we will stay there again. We had a wonderful time! Beautiful view and facility.

We attended a convention at the hotel, but booked our rooms independently and were housed at Morningstar Beach--and enjoyed it! The room had a mini-fridge and an ice maker; housekeeping came in the morning and the evening; being close to the ocean and the pool was nice; the shuttle was dependable. The convention facilities were great and the banquet food was delicious and served with efficiency. The water taxi was convenient and fun and the scenic elevator worked every time we needed it except one afternoon. Everything was expensive--but we brought our own snacks. The views from the Hotel are magnificent and the iguanas are memorable. All in all, our 5 days at St. Thomas were delightful (except the weather was SO hot and humid!!) Being able to print (free) our airline boarding passes at the Business Center was a big help. We were glad we accidentally discovered this capability--also the soft-side cooler gift from the Vacation Club desk is nice. Other thoughts: We were not impressed with the astro-turf tennis courts. We did not buy any meals at the resort. The saleslady at Cardow's was very helpful and very patient. We enjoyed lunch twice in Charlotte Amalie at the Green Tree. We took a taxi tour of St. Thomas and a ferry and tour to St. John's.

A few things you need to know. We"re travelers, we"re in our early 40's. We live in NY, we are use to good restaurants, a lot to do and not waiting long for anything. The resort is in the perfect spot on the island. The small ferry is a 12 minute coast across the harbor to Charlotte Amalie. Blackbeards Castle, shopping, Yacht Haven, etc.. (Does not run on Sundays) Runs every hour on the top of the hour. The resort offers 5 different places to eat. All decent food, priced OK (if you are use to traveling and dining out) Havana Blue is very expensive, great atmosphere, really nice for a special, special night. In the resort there is a market you can pick up just about anything from sandwiches, rolls in the morning, danish to vodka or a gift to bring home. They are open from 6am - 2am! Very convenient. There is also a jewlery store that has the same prices as downtown - we priced all of them. Our room was in the sea cliff wing which is situated looking over the harbor closest to St. John near the Morning Star part of the resort. Morning Star is much more private, right on the beach, but away from all resort activity just a shuttle ride away. There is a shop and a restaurant. Our room was on the 5th floor and nice. TV's are small, air conditioned leaked one day and the ceiling had some spots on it and the bed was hard. Other than that it was fine! The Resort is great for the price and more. We will be going back. Be reasonable if you want the Ritz Carlton be willing to pay for it. Go and see for yourself it will be worth it.

After reading other reviews about this hotel, we were optimistic but not certain that the hotel would meet or exceed expectations. The optimism was rewarded. The strengths of the hotel are its excellent location and views, the pools, the beach, the lobbie and common areas, and generally, the staff. After reading many reviews, we were nervous about the rooms. Ours was in the older part of th hotel overlooking the bay. It was an absolutely fantastic view. The room itself was not impressive, but not bad either (that is, average). Having a car is generally a good idea on St. Thomas, but parking at this hotel is limited and if you don't find a spot the area around the hotel, it will present a problem. The only other downside is that you will walk many, many stairs. The hotel is built on the side of a hill--which provides the outstanding views but be prepared for some exercise. We only had a few meals at the hotel--mostly a light breakfast and a couple of light meals on the beach. Our dinners were at other island restaurants. The staff gave generally good service, though at "island speed". You do have to examine your checks, as mistakes seemed too common, although not always to the hotels' favor. After a week of viewing the island and other resorts, The Frenchman's Reef is probably the best resort on the island. Other visitors we talked with would have changed accomodations with us in a minute. My wife was absolutely thrilled with the hotel, its staff, the views, and the vacation. Although not perfect, it set a standard that will be tough to beat.

Make sure this is where you want to stay
