TimeOut Barcelona, 11th Edition
TimeOut Guides, 2008; $19.95.
TimeOut guides, more than most guides, do a fabulous job of outlining a city’s history. If you bother to read the opening chapter and not skip ahead to all the tourist information, you’ll go on your vacation with a little context under your belt. This can be only a good thing for a traveler who wants more out of their trip than just hitting the sights. The 11th edition of this Barcelona guide doesn’t disappoint, and 22 pages are dedicated to the city’s history and future developments.
Pros
Whatever you might be looking for, from playgrounds for the kids to gay nightclubs to where to buy local crafts, you’ll find a suggestion in this guide. With a large team of contributors updating the book annually (as opposed to every other year, like many guidebooks do), the advice is quite current and comprehensive. The writers call it like it is, which is refreshing. If a restaurant doesn’t live up to the hype, they say so.
Great Tips
Callout boxes feature subjects including a menu glossary, modern art and architecture walking tours, interviews with chefs, interesting facts about living statues who pose for tourists and how to figure out your coffee options.
Cons
No real cons here, unless you’d rather not deal with all the expository writing.
Worth Buying?
Yes, it’s packed with info, and the smaller TimeOut Shortlist Barcelona guide (TimeOut Guides, 2008; $11.95), though less detailed, is also a good choice.
