Charlie Leocha’s Ski Snowboard America, 21st Edition

World Leisure Corporation, 2009, $24.95

When a guide is in its 21st edition, you know the publisher is doing something right. Leocha and a team of more than a dozen writers—and passionate skiers—meticulously detail virtually every ski resort in the United States and Canada. As a black-diamond skier and a member of the North American Snowsports Journalist Association (NASJA), Leocha knows what he’s talking about. Everything from lift tickets to children’s programs to nightlife, not to mention the best ski trails, are covered in depth.

Pros

I like the way this book is organized. After each resort listing you’ll find all the vitals in a box right up front including the number of lifts, ski acreage, beginner to advanced skiing options and more. Easy to read, you can flip through the book and find icons representing dining, accommodation and activities so you can see whether that resort is a good fit or not.

Great Tips

The detailed information rings with the truth. You just know the writers were there and didn’t lift details from the resort Web site. Speaking of Web sites, you can get updates of resorts listed in the guidebook at www.skisnowboard.com.

Cons

Fact-filled? Yes. Fascinating reading? Not exactly. This book is for those researching a trip, not armchair travelers.

Worth Buying?

Yes; it’s an encyclopedia of knowledge.
