History can be found throughout Barcelona. A starting point is Museu d’História de la Ciutat, with exhibits tracing the city’s development from antiquity. The medieval Barri Gótic, the city’s oldest residential district has numerous examples of Gothic architecture along with remains of the Roman period. The architecture of Antoni Gaudí, such as La Sagrada Familia or Casa Batlló, stand as reminders of the city’s growth in the Eixample district during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, extending the city and providing an opportunity for the Art Nouveau movement to flourish.

For more recent history, the Olympic Stadium, Anella Olímpica and Port Olímpic renovated or built for the 1992 Olympic Games stand as impressive reminders of the exquisite sporting event that reintroduced the city to the world.
