Due to the large number of whales in the area and their proximity to the shoreline, the island of Maui is considered to be one of the top spots in the world for whale watching. Each winter, more than 3,500 humpback whales come to Hawaii to mate and give birth, and the shallow seas off Maui’s west and south shores are some of their favorite places. One of the best places to learn about the whales you’ll see, as well as arrange an excursion, is the Pacific Whale Foundation. It’s even possible to spy whales from land in places like McGregor Point and Pu’u Olai.
